The Truth About Grocery Store Tea

And 5 Reasons Why You Should Stop Drinking It

Do you drink tea every day? If you do, then you might want to think about where you get it from and what you put in your mug. The tea bags at the grocery store are lower quality than what you could get elsewhere. Here are five reasons why...

1. Most "tea" sold in tea bags is just tea dust

When you buy tea bags at the grocery store, you're getting tea leftovers and crumbs from higher quality tea leaves that have been pulverized into dust. This dust is then packaged into tea bags and sold to unsuspecting consumers. Not only is this dust less flavorful than whole leaf tea, it also contains fewer nutrients and health benefits.

2. Grocery store teas are mass produced with chemicals and pesticides

Tea production is big business and most of the tea sold in grocery stores is mass produced. This tea is grown in suboptimal conditions, which maximizes profits but sacrifices quality, and requires the use of chemicals and pesticides.

3. By the time tea lands on the shelf it's old and stale

Before tea makes its way to the store, the whole process takes months. It has to be sorted, transported between warehouses, shipped across different countries. Then it will finally be packed into tea bags and repackaged to be sold. Then once again it has to be shipped and distributed to stores. Before that tea makes it to your cup, it can be years old and has lost most of its flavor and aromatics.

4. Choose fair/direct trade tea to support local communities

When you buy fair trade or direct trade tea, you know that the farmers who grew the tea are being paid a fair wage. This type of tea also supports local communities and small farmers. The money is reinvested back into these communities, which helps to improve the quality of life for everyone involved.

5. 90% of tea sold at the grocery store comes from 3 countries

Did you know that more than 50 countries produce tea? Yet, the majority of tea sold at grocery stores comes from just 3 countries. This tea is often mass produced and of lower quality. Each tea producing region has its own unique flavor profile, so by choosing tea from a variety of countries, you'll be able to enjoy a greater variety of flavors. Add adventure to your daily routine by tasting teas from around the world!
